COLUMBUS, Ohio (SMU) -- The SMU Mustangs earned their fourth top-two finish of the season on Sunday, taking second at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate at the Ohio State University Golf Club. Junior Bryson Dechambeau led the way for SMU in the final round, carding a 2-under 69 to tie for third on the individual leaderboard.
SMU posted a team score of 294 in the final round, with juniors Austin Smotherman and Ryan Burgess each posting 2-over 73s. Smotherman tied for seventh overall at 1-over, his fifth top-10 result this season. Burgess tied for 13th at 4-over par, recording his best finish of the season. Freshman Ben Baxter gave SMU its fourth counting score with an 8-over 79.
The Mustangs entered the final day tied for second with event host Ohio State, but cleared the Buckeyes by four strokes by the end of the match. Georgia Tech took the team victory by 16 strokes.
"The guys played well all weekend, but we just made too many mistakes," SMU head coach Jason Enloe said. "I'm happy with the result, but I was hoping to give Georgia Tech a better run at the end. If we had played the last six holes better, we could have made it a little closer at the end."
DeChambeau closed his round with birdies on 16 and 18 to jump to the top three at 3-under, tying with Georgia Tech's Ollie Schniederjans, the No. 2 ranked amateur in the world. Two other Yellow Jackets tied for the individual title at 5-under -- Anders Albertson and Vince Whaley. Ohio State's Grant Weaver rounded out the top five at 1-under par.
Next up for the Mustangs is the American Athletic Conference Championships, where the squad will be looking to defend its inaugural title from a year ago. The tournament will take place April 26-28 at the Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto, Fla.
