Bybel Leads SMU To Sweep Against Clemson

DALLAS (SMU) -- Abbey Bybel scored a match-high 13 kills with nine digs to lead the SMU volleyball team to a 3-0 victory (25-8, 25-10, 25-17) over Clemson in Moody Coliseum in the first round of the DoubleTree Invitational Friday afternoon.

After holding Clemson (5-5) to 10 points or less in each of the first two sets, the Mustangs (8-2) were forced to work a little harder to complete the sweep in the third. SMU led by just two points, 18-16, before going on a 7-1 run to end the match with a 25-17 win in the third.

SMU hit .404 in the match, the fifth-highest attack percentage by SMU in a match all-time, scoring 47 kills with just seven errors. Janelle Giordano hit .778, scoring seven kills without an error in nine attempts. Katie Hegarty finished with 11 kills, and Cailin Bula added eight. Avery Acker recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 39 assists and 12 digs. Morgan Heise tallied a match-high 15 digs, and Lauren Mills added 11. Clemson was held to a .000 attack percentage with 19 kills, and SMU posted blocks on 11 of 19 errors by the Tigers.

The Mustangs scored the first seven points of the first set en route to a 25-8 win. Clemson scored consecutive points just once in the set, being held to a -.054 attack percentage. The Mustangs posted five blocks, and Heise had eight of SMU's 21 digs. The Mustangs scored 16 kills with just one error, attacking at a .484 clip. Four SMU players scored three kills, while Bybel led the offense with four kills.

SMU started the second set on an 11-1 run, cruising to a 25-10 victory for a 2-0 lead in the match. The Mustangs hit .481 with 14 kills and just one error, and held Clemson to a -.036 attack percentage. The Tigers managed just five kills, and SMU scored on three blocks. Hegarty had a set-high five kills, and Bybel scored four.

The Mustangs host rival TCU Friday night at 7:30 p.m. before facing UTSA Saturday at 3:30 p.m. TCU defeated UTSA 3-1 in the first match of the DoubleTree Invitational.
