DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team played solid defense and had chances to score, but the Mustangs fell to TCU on Friday at Westcott Field.
Taylor Jackson and Paige Jacobs had standout moments in the 2-0 loss to the Horned Frogs.
Midway through the opening period, a TCU forward got behind the SMU defense and goalkeeper Shannon Moroney, but Jackson was able to recover and cleared the ball just before the shot was taken on an empty net, keeping the Horned Frogs off the scoreboard.
The defense would hold strong in the first half as Taylor Barg, Kelsey Gorney, Haley Thompson and Jackson kept TCU from scoring, even though the Horned Frogs were on the attack for most of the opening 45 minutes.
The Mustangs had their best scoring chance, early in the second half, when Jacobs squared up a cross from the edge of the box that went just high of the net. Jacobs has scored all three of her goals via first-time shots off of crosses this season.
TCU's McKenzie Oliver broke the 0-0 draw, as she scored in the 52nd minute. Moroney made a save on a point blank shot that bounced toward Oliver, and the Horned Frog forward sent a shot into the net. Oliver would score a second goal, less than 90 seconds later to give TCU the 2-0 lead, and eventual victory.
SMU head coach Chris Petrucelli said that the Mustangs gave it their all in tonight's match against a physical and fast TCU side.
"We tried hard, I'll say that," Petrucelli said. "We tried hard and we fought hard and our effort was good."
Petrucelli said that tonight's match was good preparation for when SMU opens up American Athletic Conference play on Thursday against Cincinnati.
"Cincinnati's gonna be the same way, you know, it's gonna be a hard game," Petrucelli said. "They are physical; they play hard so hopefully this prepares us for that."
The Mustangs will be back in action on Thursday as they host Cincinatti at 7 p.m. CT at Westcott Field. For tickets, go to http://www.smumustangs.com/tickets/.
