SMU Suffers 66-48 Loss to No. 20/18 USF

DALLAS (SMU) - McKenzie Adams recorded her 16th double-digit scoring performance of the season, but the 15-point effort fell short as the SMU women's basketball team suffered a 66-48 loss to No. 20/18 USF Sunday afternoon in Moody Coliseum.

Stephanie Collins added six points for SMU (9-11, 4-5 American Athletic Conference) with nine rebounds and a team-high four assists. The 6-5 forward also recorded four blocks, tying Karlin Kennedy for third on the SMU single-season block list with 47 blocks. Gabrielle Wilkins finished with seven points and grabbed five rebounds, while Morgan Bolton also scored seven and had four rebounds.

The Mustangs outscored USF (15-5, 8-2 The American) 16-15 in the opening 10 minutes, holding the Bulls to 33 percent from the field (6-of-18), including 1-of-5 from behind the 3-point arc. USF opened the second quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 20-16 lead with 7:50 remaining in the first half. Trailing 25-18 with 5:51 left in the half, SMU went on an 8-0 run to pull ahead, 26-25. Wilkins highlighted the run, scoring five unanswered points, including a three-point play to cut the deficit to one. Dai'ja Thomas converted two free-throw attempts to give SMU a 27-26 lead with 1:48 remaining in the half. The Bulls scored eight unanswered points to close out the half and take a 33-26 lead into the locker room.

Trailing 33-26 at halftime, the Mustangs were outscored by the Bulls 13-9 in the third quarter, trailing 46-35 with 10 minutes left to play. Trailing 62-43 with 3:09 left in the game, SMU chipped away at the 19-point deficit, going on a 5-0 run to cut the USF lead to 14, 62-48. The Bulls added four points in the final two minutes to round off the victory.

The SMU women's basketball team plays at Temple Wednesday at 12 p.m. ET/11 a.m. CT at Liacouras Center in Philadelphia. The Mustangs are 2-3 all-time against Temple. Earlier this season, SMU earned a 69-67 come-from-behind victory in Moody Coliseum at Dallas. The American Digital Network will televise the game.
