Mustangs Fall At No. 22/18 USF, 83-56

TAMPA, Fla. (SMU) - Gabrielle Wilkins recorded her second-consecutive double-double with 14 points and matched her career-high with 13 rebounds, but the SMU women's basketball team fell 83-56 at No. 22/18 USF in the Sun Dome Thursday night. Wilkins, the lone senior on the SMU roster, now has four career double-doubles and has scored at least 10 points in seven games this season.

Wilkins, one of two Mustangs to score at least 10 points, went 4-for-8 from 3-point range while leading the team with four assists. Sophomore guard McKenzie Adams finished with 20 points, going 4-for-8 from outside the 3-point arc and 2-for-2 from the free throw line. The sophomore has eclipsed 20 points three times this season, and scored in double figures in the last seven games. Alicia Froling and Stephanie Collins both recorded two blocks apiece, bringing their career block totals to 73 and 61, respectively.

Trailing 44-17 at halftime, the Mustangs (6-8, 1-2 The American) came out of the break and outscored the Bulls 21-14 in the third quarter, trailing 58-38 with 10 minutes left to play. The Bulls (10-3, 3-0 The American) outscored SMU 25-18 in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.

SMU held the Bulls to 18 points and trailed by six, 18-12, after the opening 10 minutes, before USF held the Mustangs to five points in the second quarter to take a 44-17 lead at halftime. Kitija Laksa scored 38 points to lead USF, hitting eight 3-pointers, tied for third in a game in the American Athletic Conference.

SMU plays its third road game in a four-game stretch at Houston Sunday at 2 p.m. CT in Hofheinz Pavilion. The Cougars are 4-10, 0-3 in the American Athletic Conference, and play No. 1 Connecticut Friday before taking on the Mustangs.
