MEMPHIS, Tenn. (SMU) – The SMU volleyball team earned a hard-fought sweep at Memphis Friday night, winning by a combined seven points for the 3-0 win (31-29, 25-22, 25-23).
Katie Hegarty recorded her third double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs to lead the Mustangs, and
Kristen Stehling scored 11 kills with four blocks.
The Mustangs (14-6, 7-1 American Athletic Conference) closed out the match with a 25-23 win in the third set, coming back late to secure the victory. Memphis (8-11, 0-7 The American) led 22-20, but the Mustangs scored the next three points to take the advantage back. The Tigers scored the next point before SMU scored consecutive points for the win.
Stehling led all attackers with a .280 attack percentage. Each team finished with double-digit blocks, with SMU posting 10 and Memphis recording 10.5.
Janelle Giordano tallied six of SMU's blocks and scored eight kills. Heise led all players with 18 digs, joining
Lauren Mills (14), freshman
Montana Watts (13) and Hegarty (10) in double digits for the Mustangs, who had 69 digs as a team. Memphis hit .095 with 36 kills as a team, led by Catilin Lilly with 10 kills.
SMU fought off four Memphis attempts to win the first set, and eventually scored the consecutive points needed to claim the victory, 31-29. With the Tigers leading 24-22, Adams and Mills scored back-to-back kills to extend the set. SMU retook the lead five points later, erasing two more set-point opportunities, when Stehling scored a kill after teaming with Adams for a block. Five serves later, the score was still tied, 29-29, before Hegarty scored her sixth kill of the set. On SMU's fourth attempt to win the set, Mills served an ace to give the Mustangs the win.
The Mustangs took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-22 win in the second set. SMU trailed by two, 11-9, but retook the lead and used a 5-1 run to take a five-point advantage late in the set, 20-15. The Tigers clawed back to within three points five separate times, but managed to score just once with SMU serving set point before the Mustangs claimed the win. Giordano was involved in four of SMU's five blocks in the set, including one solo block.
SMU plays its next two matches on the road, facing USF in Tampa, Fla., Friday at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT. The Mustangs conclude the road trip Sunday at UCF Sunday at 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT.
