SAN ANTONIO (SMU) – The 21st-ranked SMU women's golf team fired its best round of the tournament on Tuesday going 1-under 287 to climb two spots and finish sixth at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational in San Antonio. The Mustangs posted a three-round 8-over 872 at the Briggs Ranch Golf Course.
No. 9 Arkansas (288-274-286--848) won the team championship, while Razorback Alana Uriell (65-68-71--204) earned medalist honors at 12-under.
"We moved up a bit on the final day and it's always good to finish strong," head coach
Jeanne Sutherland said. "We have to improve on our par 5 scoring, which means wedges and positioning off the tee. We gave up 18 and 20 shots to the leaders on the 5's alone. We were one of only six teams over par on them and only one of those teams beat us, so that's a clear path to moving up."
Freshman
Kenzie Wright played a nearly unblemished third round, carding five of her team-high 11 total birdies and only a single bogey, en route to a 4-under 68. It is the third lowest round of the season for the freshman, who has also posted rounds of 66 and 67 in tournament play. Overall, Wright (75-74-68--217) finished the event in a four-way tie for 16th.
Senior
Lindsey McCurdy had the highest finish of the tournament for the Ponies, posting her third top-10 finish in four events this season. McCurdy climbed four spots on the final day after a 2-under 70 third round to bring her three-round score to 2-under 214.
Also finishing in the top 15 was sophomore
Brigitte Dunne, who posted her best round of 2-under on Monday. In the final round, Dunne posted one of the tournaments only five eagles. Her even-par 216 placed her in a tie for 14th.
"It was great to see Lindsey get another top 10 finish. She is playing very well and is a good leader for us," Sutherland said. "Brigitte had her best tournament of the fall and has done a good job of working on what we've asked of her.
"Kenzie continues to play solid golf, and her game is good enough for her to play more aggressively. As she learns what she's capable of, we will seem more low scores. Ana Paula [Ramirez] also had a nice day
today. She gets better every week."
Competing as an individual, freshman
Ana Paula Ramirez posted her best round of the tournament on Tuesday going 1-over to bring her three-day total to 8-over 224.
Seniors
Alex Celli (77-73-79--229) and
Katie Page (75-77-77--229) also represented the Mustangs finishing tied for 60th.
"We will keep working and improving week to week," Sutherland concluded. "This team gives us all they have and they're very coachable and positive, which makes us competitive in every event."
The Mustangs return home to Dallas Nov. 7 & 8 for the first annual Trinity Forest Invitational Presented By Vic Salvino. Check SMUMustangs.com for tournament information and ways to follow.
