SOUTHLAKE, Texas (SMU) – The SMU women's swimming and diving team defeated American Athletic Conference opponent Houston, 170-128, on Friday evening at the Carroll ISD Natatorium. The Mustangs won 11 of 14 swimming events en route to the victory.
Relays
SMU won both relays in the event, opening with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay as
Matea Samardzic,
Tara-Lynn Nicholas,
Marne Erasmus and
Hannah Rogers clocked a 1:45.38 to outpace the field. The night closed with the Mustangs earning the win in the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:29.39. SMU was represented by
Maddie Hoch,
Adrienn Santa,
Erin Trahan and
Vicky Cunningham.
Freestyle
The Mustangs won four of five freestyle events, with Cunningham sweeping all three of her races. She posted times of 23.81 in the 50, 51.68 in the 100 and 1:51.21 in the 200. SMU's fourth win in the discipline came from Hoch, who registered a 4:59.06 in the 500 free. Hoch (1,000),
Ursa Bezan (200), Rogers (50) and Santa (100) all posted runner-up finishes in the free.
Backstroke
Samardzic swept the backstroke events, continuing her dominance in the stroke. The reigning AAC Swimmer of the Week outpaced her closest competition in the 100 by more than two seconds finishing in a time of 55.50. In the 200, she widened the margin posting a 1:59.62 for the win. Freshman
Eva Gliozeryte (100) and
Agata Magner (200) finished second in their respective distances.
Butterfly
The Ponies swept fly events with 2016 All-American Erasmus winning the 100 in a time of 55.22, and freshman
Erin Trahan taking the 200 in 2:04.08. Trahan was also second in the 100.
IM
The lone individual medley event of the night was won by Samardzic, who posted a dominate victory clocking a 2:04.15 in the 200.
Diving
Lauren Lamb competed on both the 1 and 3 meter springboards, contributing to the Mustangs' score with a pair of third-place finishes.
