BOULDER, Colo. (SMU)— The SMU women's basketball team fell to the Colorado Buffaloes, 67-50, in the championship game of the Omni Hotel Classic Saturday morning in Boulder, Colorado. The Mustangs are now 4-2 overall, while the Buffaloes remain unbeaten at 6-0 on the season.
SMU's offense heated up in the second half as they outscored Colorado, 19-12, in the third quarter, shooting 50 percent from the field (6-12) and the three point line (1-2). Three Mustangs finished with double digit scoring, including
McKenzie Adams who posted nine of her 11 total points in the second half.
Alicia Froling also turned up the offense after the break, scoring eight of her 11 total points, going 7-12 from the free-throw line, in the last two quarters.
To open the half, Froling attacked down the baseline and found a waiting
Dai'ja Thomas to make the easy bucket. Just two possessions later, Froling found Thomas again on the drive for another two points, cutting the deficit to 14. Thomas also added six of her total 10 points in the second half, scoring off of several offensive rebounds. The sophomore finished with four offensive rebounds of her total seven. After an offensive surge by Colorado, Adams nailed two free-throws, converted on a baseline drive and knocked down a jumper in transition late in the third quarter to bring the Mustangs within 11, their lowest deficit of the half.
Mikayla Reese added five points off the bench in the second half, nailing a three and converting on an attack down the lane in transition.
Morgan Bolton also posted five points, hitting the only three-pointer for the Mustangs in the first half.
Adams and Froling finished with double-doubles, posting 11 points and 10 rebounds each. It is Adams' first double-double of her career as the junior grabbed a new career-high 10 rebounds. It is Froling's fifth of the season and the 24th of her career.
Froling was named to the Omni Hotel Classic All-Tournament team for her performances against Boston College in the semifinals and Colorado in the championship match. The junior averaged 17.2 points and eight rebounds per game in the tournament and is averaging a double-double (17.0 PTS and 11.5 RBS) on the season.
