DALLAS (SMU) – SMU football alumnus Aaron "Spike" Davis was the 2016 Professional Rugby Organization (PRO Rugby) try leader with 14 in the league's inaugural season. Davis, a winger for the Ohio Aviators, scored a total of 70 points which ranked sixth in the league.
Davis' 14 tries helped lead the Aviators to an 8-4-0 record, including a six-game win streak to finish the season. Davis recorded his first two professional rugby tries in week three against San Francisco. During the course of weeks 9–13, he scored nine tries, with two scores in four of five games. Davis finished the season with 28 tackles.
Prior to his transition to the Ohio Aviators, Davis played for Tiger Rugby Olympic Development Academy in Columbus, Ohio. During his tenure with Tiger Rugby, he was called up to the USA Men's Eagles rugby team to help bolster the roster in preparation for the Americans Rugby Championship match against Canada. He was called into Men's Eagles Sevens High Performance Camps in Chula Vista, Calif., before touring with the USA Falcons on the 2016 South American Tour.
Davis was a four-year letterman on the Hilltop (2009-12), seeing time at defensive tackle and on special teams. The Elsinore, California, native saw action in 52 games in the red and blue, accumulating 82 total tackles with nine for loss. After his SMU career, Davis participated in mini camps with the Green Bay Packers and the Washington Redskins before transitioning to rugby.
