FORT WORTH, Texas (SMU) – Katie Hegarty scored 20 kills, including eight in the third set, to lead the SMU volleyball team to a 3-1 (17-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-20) win at TCU Friday night. The Mustangs (7-4) won three straight sets after the Horned Frogs (6-3) took the first set. SMU is now 13-5 all-time against the Horned Frogs, winning 3-2 in Dallas last season.
Hegarty hit .279 in the match, and had 18 kills in the last three sets after scoring just two in the first. The junior had six kills in the final set, leading the Mustangs to a 25-20 victory to win the match. SMU took a 13-5 lead to start the fourth set, but TCU rallied for a 6-1 run, cutting the lead to three, 14-11. SMU head coach
Lisa Seifert used a timeout to calm her team down, and The Mustangs ended the TCU run with back-to-back kills, going on to victory.
Morgan Heise recorded 27 digs, and
Lauren Mills posted her third double-double of the season and second of the day with 12 kills and 16 digs.
Kristen Stehling added nine kills, and
Janelle Giordano scored seven with three blocks. SMU just .179 in the match as a team, but out-scored TCU 54-46 off the attack. The Mustangs also served eight aces with three by Hegarty.
The Mustangs took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-19 victory in the third set, led by Hegarty's eight kills. SMU hit .308 with 18 kills, while holding TCU to 10 kills and a .135 attack percentage, its lowest of the night. SMU took a 7-2 lead to start the set, scoring four kills and a block. TCU cut the lead to three with back-to-back points, but SMU quickly stretched it to six, 10-4. TCU never got within four points again.
SMU dropped the first set 25-17, unable to comeback after TCU established an early lead. The Horned Frogs led 8-1 after nine serves, but the Mustangs rallied to score five of the next six points, cutting the lead to three. After a TCU timeout, the Horned Frogs stretched the lead, holding the Mustangs to just three of the next 11 points, taking a 17-9 lead. SMU was unable to cut into the deficit as the set wound down.
SMU answered back in the second set with a 25-20 win to even the match. Neither team led by more than two points until the Mustangs went on a 7-2 run, erasing a two-point deficit to take a 21-18 lead. The burst was enough as the Horned Frogs managed just two more points. After hitting .025 with eight unforced errors in the first set, SMU's offense hit .211 with 13 kills in the second.
The Mustangs face No. 8 North Carolina Saturday at noon in the championship match of the TCU invitational. It is the last non-conference match of the season as SMU starts play in the American Athletic Conference Thursday at home against East Carolina at 7 p.m.
