HOUSTON (SMU) – The SMU women's tennis team opened its 2016 fall tournament schedule Friday by advancing two entries to the winner's bracket in singles and doubles at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
Despite a two-hour rain delay, the Mustangs were able to still complete all of six of their matches heading into the Saturday's second round.
Freshman
Charline Anselmo picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win over Ana Perez of Texas State in the first round of Flight 3B singles and teamed with sophomore
Ana Perez-Lopez to defeat Sonja Radosevic and Arisha Ladhani of Denver, 6-2, in Flight 2A doubles.
Perez-Lopez dropped a close match to Alabama's Maddie Pothoff (6-4, 2-6, 6-1) in Flight 2A singles., while senior
Macie Elliott fell 6-3, 6-2 to Priya Niezgoda of Rice in Flight 3A singles. Sophomore
Ellie Zogg and freshman
Sara Jamal also competed Friday for the Mustangs. Zogg lost to Denver's Ladhani 6-2, 7-5 and Jamal fell 6-3, 6-2 to Claudia Castella of Southern Miss.
In doubles action, Elliott and Jamal fell 6-2 to Rikeetha Pereira and Elena Roca of Southern Miss.
Second round action opens at 8:30 Saturday morning with doubles action.
