HOUSTON (SMU) – The SMU women's tennis team finished up the second day of play at the Rice Invitational Saturday at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
Freshman
Charline Anselmo and sophomore
Ana Perez-Lopez advanced to the semifinals of the Flight 2A doubles before falling to Alison Ho and Savannah Durkin of Rice, 6-3. In the first round, the duo defeated Sonja Radosevic and Arisha Ladhani of Denver, 6-2.
Senior
Macie Elliott and freshman
Sara Jamal defeated the pair of Yadira Rubio (Texas State) and Caitlyn Mitchell (Sam Houston State) 6-0 to advance to the consolation finals in Flight 3A Doubles.
Anselmo advanced to the semifinals of the winner's bracket in Flight 3B singles after picking up a 6-4, 6-4 win over Ana Perez of Texas State in the first round, but fell to Christina Sisti of Tulane 6-2, 6-2.
A trio of Mustangs collected wins in singles play with senior
Macie Elliott, sophomore
Ellie Zogg and Perez-Lopez all advancing to consolation finals in their respective brackets. Elliott defeated Sarah Jurakova 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 in Flight 3A singles, while Zogg advanced past Julia Kral of McNeese State in Flight 4A singles. Perez-Lopez picked up a 6-2, 7-6 (6) victory against Jessica Birowski of UT Arlington.
Zogg fell short against Navajo Melendez of Texas State, 6-4, 7-6 (5), in an extra match.
Freshman
Sara Jamal also competed for the Mustangs and fell 6-3, 6-3 in Flight 6A singles to Diya Menon of Southern Miss.
Final round action opens at 8:30 Sunday morning with doubles action.
