TUCSON, Ariz. (SMU) – Lauren Mills recorded her first career double-double to lead the SMU volleyball team to a 3-0 win (25-7, 25-18, 25-18) against Alabama State in its final match at the Arizona Invitational. The junior scored 10 kills, hitting .304, and had 14 digs to earn all-tournament honors.
Morgan Heise was also named to the all-tournament team, recording 60 digs in the three matches, including 13 against Alabama State. The Mustangs won the third set 25-18 to complete the sweep, their second of the season. Mills scored the last kill for her 10th of the match.
Katie Hegarty also finished with 10 kills, and
Janelle Giordano scored nine kills and had three blocks.
Kendall Patterson recorded 37 assists and seven digs. SMU hit .326 with 42 kills as a team, while holding Alabama State to a .010 attack percentage.
The Mustangs held Alabama State to just one kill in the first set, cruising to a 25-7 win. SMU recorded 22 digs as a team, with Heise getting credit for seven, and had two blocks. The Mustangs scored 13 points before the Lady Jackets scored their second point of the set, and SMU scored the last six points in-a-row.
The second set was closer than the first, but the Mustangs hit .484 with 18 kills for a 25-18 win in the second set, taking a 2-0 lead in the match. Alabama State scored 11 kills, but were still no threat to even the match. SMU took a 12-5 lead, going on an 8-1 run, and the Lady Jackets didn't get within five points of the lead again.
SMU plays at N.C. State Friday and Saturday. The Mustangs face Delaware in the first match Friday at 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT.
