DALLAS (SMU) --- SMU's football, men's basketball and women's basketball programs had a record-setting fall semester in the classroom. The football and women's basketball teams set program-best cumulative grade-point-averages while men's basketball reached its highest cumulative GPA since 2004.
Â
"As a department, our first goal is to graduate student-athletes with the knowledge and skills required to become valuable citizens and leaders in their communities, and this speaks to that focus," said Director of Athletics Rick Hart. "We are thankful for the continued support of the SMU faculty and academic support personnel, and the student-athletes, coaches, staff should all be applauded for their successes. These are records we hope to continue breaking."
Â
It was the second-straight outstanding semester for all three programs. Football had a new program high in the spring of 2016. Spring of 2016 also saw women's basketball record its best spring since 2005 and men's basketball post its best mark since 2011.
Â
The programs combined for 35 American Athletic Conference All-Academic Honors in 2016. Football led the way with 29 representatives while men's and women's basketball had three apiece.
