DALLAS (SMU) – SMU women's tennis team picked up three victories against BYU on day one of Metroplex Mania Friday evening at the SMU Tennis Complex, Turpin Stadium & Brookshire Family Pavilion.

SMU was led by freshmen Sarai Monarrez Yesaki, Sara Jamal and senior Macie Elliott. In No. 1 singles, Monarrez Yesaki dropped the first set against Mayci Jones, but would regroup to take the next two to win the match, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Wright defeated Kate Cusick, 6-1, 5-6, 6-4, in No. 6 singles play, while Jamal recorded a 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 victory against Alana Bourgeois in No. 8 singles play.  

Sophomores Ana Perez-Lopez and Ellie Zogg both fell in close matches against the Cougars. In No. 2 singles, Perez-Lopez fell to Natella Nabieva, 5-7, 6-2, 2-6, while Zogg lost to Taylah Beckman in No. 7 singles, 3-6, 7-6, 3-6.

Freshman Charline Anselmo lost in three sets to Polina Malykh, 6-3, 0-6, 5-7, while seniors Dasha Sharapova and Macie Elliott each fell in straight sets in No. 3 and No. 5 singles, respectively.

The Mustangs and the Cougars were the only two teams to compete on the first day of the tournament. All four teams (SMU, BYU, North Texas and Rice) are slated to compete tomorrow in singles and doubles play.

Tournament play will resume tomorrow with doubles play at 10:00 A.M.
