Despite Close Finish SMU Falls At East Carolina, 58-57

Jan. 7, 2017

GREENVILLE, N.C. (Dallas) – Alicia Froling earned her 10th double-double of the season with 22 points (7-for-12) and 15 rebounds despite the SMU women's basketball team falling to East Carolina, 58-57. The Mustangs are now 10-5 overall and 1-1 in the American Athletic Conference, while the Pirates improved to 10-6 and 1-2 in the AAC.

McKenzie Adams scored 15 points and grabbed five rebounds, scoring in double digits for the 11th time this season. It was the 12th game this season with two or more Mustangs scoring in double figures.

With 2:58 left in the third quarter, Adams nailed a three-pointer from the corner to tie the game at 37 apiece. It was the seventh tie of the game and the junior's first three-pointer of the afternoon. The Mustangs took the one-point lead at the end of the third quarter as Adams converted at the basket and Froling added a free-throw with 16 seconds left to give SMU the 44-22, two point lead.

Froling found Kiara Perry cutting down the lane for a lay-up at the rim, to give SMU a six point lead, 50-44, the largest Mustang lead of the game with 7:21 left in the fourth quarter. The Pirates fought back to take a three-point lead, 55-52, with 1:20 remaining. However, Morgan Bolton nailed her first three of the afternoon with just 31 seconds on the clock to tie the game at 55 apiece.

ECU's Antoinette Bannister converted a desperation three-pointer with  15.7 remaining, and Adams' free throw attempts came up just short as the Mustangs dropped their first conference game of the season, 58-57.

Froling earned her 10th double-double of the season and the 29th of her career, shooting 7-for-12 from the field and 8-for-12 from the free throw line. Perry added six points and four rebounds, shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

SMU returns to Moody Coliseum to host Tulane Jan. 11 at 7 p.m., before welcoming No. 1 Connecticut Jan. 14 at 2 p.m.
