DALLAS (SMU) – Brittany Adams scored 18 kills to lead the SMU volleyball team to a 3-1 victory (25-21, 25-17, 22-25, 25-20) against Connecticut in Moody Coliseum Saturday. With the win, SMU improved to 19-8 overall, 13-3 in the American Athletic Conference, while the Huskies dropped to 11-17, 4-12 in The American.
SMU ended the match with a 25-20 victory in the fourth set, with Adams scoring nine kills to match her total through the first three sets. The junior also serves aces for the SMU's last two points of the match. After UConn scored three straight to tie the score tied, 20-20, the Mustangs scored five straight points with three kills before Adams' pair of aces for the win.
Adams also had 11 digs for her 11th double-double of the season.
Lauren Mills scored 12 kills with 13 digs for her 17th double-double.
Katie Hegarty added nine kills and three blocks.
Kendall Patterson recorded her 13th double-double with 46 assists and 10 digs.
Montana Watts had a team-high 19 digs.
The Huskies scored back-to-back kills to take a 15-13 lead midway through the third set, and held the advantage the rest of the way for a 25-22 win. The score was tied nine times in the set, but the lead changed sides just twice. Connecticut managed a .317 attack percentage with 21 kills, despite three blocks by SMU. The Mustangs hit .257, committing just three errors to the Huskies' eight, but SMU scored just 12 kills.
The Mustangs won the first set, 25-21, despite getting outscored on the attack, 17-13, by the Huskies. SMU gained its advantage with efficiency both at the net and the service line, committing just three errors combined while Connecticut served five errors with six attack errors. Hegarty led the SMU offense with four kills, and the Mustangs hit .289 as a team.
SMU took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-17 victory in the second set. The Mustangs hit .243 with 15 kills, while holding Connecticut to a .114 attack percentage with just 10 kills. Trailing 5-3, SMU went on a 7-1 run to take a 10-6 lead, scoring four kills with a block during the stretch. The Huskies battled back to within one point, 12-11, and the SMU advantage was still just on six serves later, 15-14. Hegarty and Adams scored back-to-back kills to stretch the lead to three, 17-14. Connecticut trailed by two, 18-16, before the Mustangs went on another 7-1 run to end the set.
The Mustangs host Memphis Friday night at 7 p.m. before taking on No. 20 Wichita State Sunday at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
