PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (SMU) – SMU wrapped up play in the Battle 4 Atlantis by dropping a heartbreaker to Western Kentucky, 63-61.
Despite SMU leading for nearly 37 minutes of the game, WKU used a 6-0 run over the last minute of play to grab the win. Trailing by one, the Hilltoppers hit the game-winning 3-pointer with five seconds left while the Mustangs' last-second shot for the win did not find the mark.
Freshman Ethan Chargois led the way offensively for the Mustangs, scoring 21 points on 8-for-12 shooting. The SMU forward was on target from outside on the night as well, hitting 3 of 4 shots from beyond the arc. It was the second 20-point game of the freshman's young SMU career.
Junior Jarrey Foster also put together a very efficient outing, knocking down 8 of 11 shots for 17 points. Junior Shake Milton joined Chargois and Foster in double-figures with 11 points.
The Mustangs controlled the glass for much of the night, finishing with a plus-12 margin and 12 offensive rebounds. However, WKU was able to force 21 turnovers to slow SMU down offensively.
SMU returns home from the Bahamas with a victory over No. 2 Arizona as well as experience moving forward for a young team by playing against such high-level competition. SMU is back at home on Tuesday to face UTRGV at Moody Coliseum at 7 p.m. before a showdown against No. 10 USC on Saturday night.
