DALLAS (SMU) – The No. 43 SMU women's tennis team dropped its first home match of the spring, 5-2, to Wichita State Friday night at Turpin Stadium.

Wichita State won the doubles point after recording victories on court one and two. In No. 1 doubles, Gabriela Porubin and Fatima Bizhukova defeated Liza Buss and Dasha Sharapova, 6-1. The Shockers clinched the point after Tanaporn Thongsing and Ting-Ya Hsu 6-4 win in the No. 2 slot against Sarai Monarrez Yesaki and Ana Perez-Lopez.

The Shockers extended their lead to 3-0 after picking up wins in No. 6 and No. 5 singles. The Mustangs got within one with back-to-back victories from Monarrez Yesaki and Buss. In No. 2 singles, Monarrez Yesaki improved to 8-4 in dual matches this season after a 6-2, 6-4 win against Porubin. Buss recorded her second victory of the season against a ranked opponent with a 6-3, 6-1 win against No. 117 Giulia Gedetti.

SMU battled in No. 3 and No. 4 singles with each game going to three sets. Perez-Lopez won the first set 6-3 in the No. 3 slot against Thongsing but dropped the next two 6-0, 6-2, which clinched the team win for Wichita State. In No. 4 singles, Sharapova faced Bizhukova and fell 6-3 in the first set, but took the second set 7-5 to force a third. Bizhukova would go on to win the third 6-4 to finish out the scoring.

The Mustangs (10-3) four-match winning streak was snapped and have fell to the Shockers (6-7) for the second straight year. SMU is 2-4 all-time against Wichita State.

SMU continues its homestand next week with two matches against Georgia State and Cincinnati at the SMU Tennis Complex. The Mustangs will first face the Panthers Monday, March 13 at 4 p.m. CT, before a conference matchup against the Bearcats Tuesday at 4 p.m. CT.
