Mustangs Comeback Against Ole Miss For 3-1 Win

Nordmann leads SMU with 14 kills and three blocks

JONESBORO, Ark. (SMU) – Lexi Nordmann scored a team-high 14 kills, including one on match point, to lead the SMU volleyball team to a 3-1 victory (20-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-21) against Ole Miss in Jonesboro, Ark., Friday evening. The freshman was one of four Mustangs with at least 10 kills, hitting .423 with three blocks, including two solo blocks.

SMU (2-2) won the last three sets, ending the match with a 25-21 victory in the fourth set when Nordmann scored the kill on match point after Brittany Adams' attack was blocked into the air above the net. Ole Miss (4-2) took a 4-1 lead to start the set, but the Mustangs went on a 9-2 run, taking a 10-6 led. SMU never trailed again, keeping at least a three-point advantage the rest of the way.

Adams and Eva Linden each scored 13 kills for the Mustangs, and Lauren Mills finished with 10 kills. SMU finished with 57 kills as a team, hitting .219. The Rebels beat the Mustangs on the offensive attack, hitting .253 with 68 kills, but SMU posted seven blocks in the win. Adams had 13 digs and Mills recorded 12 as the pair each posted a double-double. Kendall Patterson also tallied a double-double with 43 assists and 12 digs. Montana Watts finished with a career-high 25 digs.

Nordmann scored six points with four kills and two blocks, and Adams had six kills in the third set to lead the Mustangs to a 25-23 win. The victory gave SMU a 2-1 lead in the match after holding off a late charge by the Rebels. Trailing 21-17, Ole Miss scored four straight to tie the score, 21-21. Adams scored a kill, and then Nordmann blocked an attack, putting the SMU lead back at two. The Rebels scored the next two, but Nordmann's second block of the set ended the run and gave the Mustangs the first chance to win the set. An Ole Miss attack error made it final, with SMU winning for the match lead.

Ole Miss hit .333 in the opening set, winning 25-20 for a 1-0 lead in the match. Linden and Adams each had three kills for the Mustangs, but it was not enough to keep pace with the Rebels, who finished with 18 kills. SMU took a 5-2 lead to start the set, but Ole Miss rallied to take its first lead, 8-7. The Mustangs were not able to retake the lead, eventually losing by five points.

The Mustangs tied the match with a 25-23 win in the second set. Trailing 23-20, SMU scored five straight points, including a pair of kills by Linden, with the second to win the set. The Mustangs scored four of the first six points for a 4-2 lead, but the Rebels again took their first lead at 8-7. Ole Miss held the lead until the Mustangs' late rally. Nordmann led the offense with seven kills, and Linden scored six in the set. SMU hit .333 as a team with 18 kills.

SMU takes on host Arkansas State Saturday at 11 a.m. before facing Virginia Tech at 4 p.m. in its final match at the Arkansas State Invitational.
