Mustangs Comeback For Five-Set Win At Texas State

Adams Matches Career High With 18 Kills To Lead SMU

SAN MARCOS, Texas (SMU) – The SMU volleyball team won 16-14 in the fifth set at Texas State Friday night. The Mustangs came back from two sets down for the 3-2 win (27-29, 22-25, 25-22, 25-21, 16-14) for their second win of the day in San Marcos, Texas.

Brittany Adams scored a match-high 18 kills, smashing the ball off a Bobcat defender for set point to match her career high. The junior scored 18 kills at Temple last season as SMU secured its second straight American Athletic Conference championship.

SMU (5-3) held a 13-11 lead in the fifth set, but the Bobcats (5-3) scored two straight to tie the score. With the score still tied, 14-14, Adams scored a kill to keep Texas State from taking the lead. The junior then ended it in dramatic fashion, sparking an emotional celebration on the SMU sideline.

The Mustangs forced the fifth set with a 25-21 win in the fourth. With the score tied, 8-8, SMU scored three straight with a block and two kills, taking an 11-8 lead. The rally sparked a 9-2 run for the Mustangs, who took a commanding 17-10 lead. The Bobcats fought their way back into the set, cutting the lead to one, 21-20, but Adams scored a kill and then served an ace for a 23-20 lead. After a Texas State point, Kelly Brunstein scored a kill and Lexi Nordmann and Lauren Mills combined for a block on set point.

Brunstein scored 14 kills with a .429 attack percentage, committing just two errors in 28 attempts, and recorded four blocks. Lauren Mills also reached double-figures, finishing with 15 kills and 19 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Adams also posted a double-double with 17 digs. Montana Watts tallied 31 digs, while Kendall Patterson had 32 assists and freshman Allison Hughes added 20 assists. SMU finished with 18 blocks as a team, with 10 by Nordmann.

The Mustangs held on to the lead for a 25-22 win in the third set. Trailing 4-2, SMU went on an 8-2 run for a 10-6 lead. Texas State cut the lead to one on five separate occasions, but SMU never let the Bobcats tie the score. With an 18-17 lead, SMU scored four straight for a 22-17 lead. When SMU pushed the lead to 24-19, Texas State scored three before Adams smashed the kill that gave SMU the set win. SMU posted four blocks in the set, while limiting Texas State to just one block, and the Bobcats hit .048 with 10 attack errors. SMU committed just six errors despite hitting .139.

Mills scored a kill to put SMU back up one, 27-26, but Texas State scored the next three to take the first set, 29-27. SMU led 20-18 after back-to-back blocks, but the Bobcats came back to take a 23-22 lead. Two points later, Texas State had its first of three chances to win the set. SMU scored back-to-back points on each of the first two serves for set point by Texas State, but the Mustangs could not get the two-point advantage needed to win the set. SMU posted seven blocks, holding Texas State to a .047 attack percentage, but the Bobcats finished with 15 kills to SMU's 11.

Texas State had six blocks in the second set, en route to a 25-22 victory for a 2-0 lead in the match. SMU led 20-18 for a second straight set, but again the Mustangs were unable to hold onto the lead. The Bobcats scored three unanswered points to take a 22-21 lead. Adams scored a kill to end the run and tie the score, 22-22, but Texas State scored the next three, taking advantage of two errors by the Mustangs, for the win. SMU had 13 kills, while Texas State scored just 12, but the defense at the net was the difference in the score.

SMU concludes action at the Texas State Creeds and Crests Classic Saturday against UMass-Lowell at 3 p.m.
