Box Score AUSTIN, Texas (SMU) – The SMU men's tennis team (1-2) fell to No. 8 Texas (3-0), 4-0, in the team's first road match of the season.
The dual match, which was originally slated for 2:30 p.m. at the Texas Tennis Complex, was relocated to the Weller Tennis Center and pushed back to a 3 p.m. start due to weather.
Texas powered through doubles play behind No. 23-ranked pair Yuya Ito and Harrison Scott. The duo defeated
Charles Nettlefold and
Roberto Rosales, 6-1, at No. 2 doubles. The Longhorns secured the doubles point with a 6-3 victory at the No. 3 spot, with Colin Markes and John Mee defeating
Gardiner Perotti and
Eladio Fabregas.
The Longhorns made quick work of SMU in singles play.
Michael Smith fell to Adrian Ortiz in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, and Yuya Ito followed with a 6-3, 6-0 win over
Charles Nettlefold.
SMU's
Jan-Simon Vrbsky and
Eladio Fabregas held off the Longhorn's ranked singles players, No. 27 Harrison Scott and No. 52 John Mee, but were stopped when Colin Markes defeated
Roberto Rosales at No. 6 (6-3, 6-3) to secure the match.
The Mustangs fall to 5-24 all-time against Texas, with a 2-12 record in Austin.
SMU returns to the court to face UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 26 at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Los Angeles, California. The following day, the Mustangs will take on either USC or Indiana.
