DALLAS (SMU) - Freshmen Johnasia Cash and Ariana Whitfield logged double-digit scoring performances for the Mustangs, but SMU fell to Cincinnati on Wednesday night, 58-40.
Cash led the way in the scoring column for the Mustangs by posting a career-high 11 points. Meanwhile, Whitfield tallied her sixth double-digit scoring performance of the season by dropping in 10 points.
Senior Klara Bradshaw was active in the post, tying her career-high by grabbing 11 hard-fought rebounds.Â
SMU held Cincy to just 35 percent shooting and 10 points below their season average in scoring. However, the Mustangs couldn't get much consistency on the offensive end either. SMU finished with 10 assists on 13 baskets but shot just 23 percent for the game. The Mustangs worked their way to the free-throw line for 20 attempts, 12 more than Cincinnati, but were only able to knock down half of them.Â
The Bearcats opened up an eight-point lead after the first 10 minutes of play, and SMU was never able to generate enough on offense to put much pressure on Cincinnati. The Mustangs did manage to cut the Cincinnati lead down to five in the second half, but the Bearcats responded with a 6-0 run to quickly push the lead back out.Â
Quick buckets were the big difference in the game, as Cincinnati really hurt the Mustangs in transition. Of the Bearcats' 58 points, 18 of them came on fast breaks. On the other end, SMU finished with 0 fast break points.Â
Both Cincinnati and SMU entered the game in the top-half of the conference in rebounding margin, but the Bearcats were able to get the better of the Mustangs on the boards on Wednesday. It was only the sixth time this season the Mustangs were out-rebounded.Â
Next up for the Mustangs is a road trip to Houston on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip.Â
