Payne Stewart Cup Moved To Nov 12

Oct 12

The Payne Stewart Cup, originally scheduled for Monday, Oct. 15, has been rescheduled for Nov. 12 due to inclement weather projected in the forecast.

"Unfortunately, Mother Nature is not cooperating with our plans to host the Payne Stewart Cup on Monday," said Jonas Woods, Chairman of the Payne Stewart Cup. "With 48-degree temperatures, 20 mph north winds and a 100% chance of rain in the forecast, we have decided to reschedule the tournament. The Payne Stewart Cup will now be held on Monday, November 12th.  Please mark your calendars and let us know if you are still able to participate.  We are very sorry for any inconvenience this creates for you.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly."

For more information regarding the tournament, contact Tournament Administrator Jessica Marquart.

About the Payne Stewart Cup:

Established in 1999, the Payne Stewart Cup is the primary fundraising event for the SMU golf teams. In honor of Payne Stewart's commitment to SMU, the tournament bears not only his name and his likeness, but his spirit as well.

Held annually at a select, premier course in Dallas, the event features top business executives, former Mustang golfers, SMU Alumni and fans from the DFW region and beyond.

Having raised more than 1.5 million dollars in support of SMU, The Payne Stewart Cup regularly attracts nationally-renowned speakers and PGA Tour professionals.

About Payne Stewart:

Payne Stewart, one of the most popular professional golfers in history, was an 11-time PGA Tour winner, a three-time major champion and a 1979 graduate of SMU. Stewart played golf at SMU from 1975-79 and was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity on campus.

Stewart won the PGA Championship in 1989 at the Kemper Lakes Golf Club in Long Grove, Ill. After entering the final round six strokes off the lead, Stewart carded a final round 67 to win the Championship by one shot. Stewart also won two U.S. Open titles; in 1991 in a playoff over Scott Simpson and in 1999 by one stroke over Phil Mickelson.

The Springfield, Mo., native passed away just four months after his second U.S. Open victory as a result of a plane accident in Florida. In 2000, the PGA Tour established the Payne Stewart Award, given each year to a player who shows respect for the traditions of the game, commitment to uphold the game's heritage of charitable support and meticulous presentation of himself and the sport through his dress and conduct.

Stewart was posthumously inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2001 and the SMU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008.
