HOUSTON (SMU) – The Mustangs secured a spot in the American Conference Tournament in Tampa with a 3-0 victory over Houston during the regular season finale.
Needing points to extend their season, the Mustangs broke out for three goals taking 28 shots in the contest. The first SMU tally came in the 31
st minute when
Courtney Sebazco connected with
Celiana Torres who found the back of the net for her seventh of the season.
In the waning moments of the first half,
Hannah Fleet made her first appearance since returning from injury and assisted on
Hannah Allred's insurance goal.
Catie Brown had a spotless first half in goal for SMU. Freshman
Samantha Estrada worked the second half, keeping the Cougars off the board. The third and final goal came in the 56
th minute. Torres rocketed a volley from long distance that put the ball right in front of goal. Senior
Blair Thorpe was able to come in and head the ball in for the finish.
The 28 shots for the Mustangs were a season-high and the most since New Mexico State in 2017. The squad held the advantage in the major offensive categories, 28-16 in shots with 16-11 for shots on goal. The Mustangs took seven corners and conceded just two.
The Mustangs will either be the four or the five seed when the tournament begins from Corbett Stadium on the campus of South Florida. Regardless of seeding, SMU will face ECU on Wednesday.
