NEW ORLEANS (SMU) - SMU was unable to slow down Tulane's offense in the final quarter as the Green Wave completed the comeback win against the Mustangs, 52-46, on Monday night.
Senior McKenzie Adams led the way for the Mustangs by scoring 20 points for her 10th game this season with at least 20 points. Adams was especially important early on, hitting all of her first seven shots and scoring 15 of the Mustangs first 18 points.
The Mustangs led for the majority of the game and appeared to take control of the game out of halftime, opening up a 10-point lead in the third quarter. However, Tulane responded in the fourth quarter by scoring 25 points after scoring just 27 points in the first three quarters combined.
The Green Wave scored the first 14 points of the fourth quarter to completely erase the Mustangs' lead and grab control of the game. SMU was unable to overcome Tulane's 64 percent shooting in the final quarter of play.
Through the first three quarters, the Mustangs had completely taken away the 3-point shot from the Green Wave as Tulane had knocked down just one in 17 attempts. However, in the fourth quarter, Tulane connected on 4-of-5 shots from range.
Three Mustangs grabbed at least eight rebounds, led by freshman Johnasia Cash with 11, as SMU was dominant on the boards. The Mustangs also grabbed 17 big offensive rebounds that led to 11 second-chance points. Tulane, on the other hand, finished with just three second-chance points.
However, turnovers helped Tulane make up for the extra chances SMU was accumulating from offensive rebounds. The Green Wave forced 18 turnovers that led to 17 points.
Next up for the Mustangs is the American Athletic Conference Tournament, where they will face off against ECU at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 3.
