Be The Match at SMU's Spring Game on Saturday

Some causes hit closer to home than others. For the SMU family, Lemons for Leukemia is especially one of those situations.

SMU men's golf's head coach Jason Enloe's wife Katie has been battling acute myeloid leukemia over the past several months. The men's golf team took part in the Lemons For Leukemia challenge to help raise awareness for leukemia as well as encourage others to join the marrow registry at Be The Match. The team has also added orange to its color scheme during competitions as well, the color for leukemia awareness.

Over the past few weeks, the SMU women's golf team, athletic director Rick Hart, and head football coach Sonny Dykes have all taken part in the Lemons for Leukemia challenge.

"Lemons for Leukemia is for a great cause and one that hits extremely close to home," Enloe said. "My wife Katie was recently diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia  and is currently in treatment at MD Anderson in Houston. Through this struggling time our family wishes to beat Leukemia and to continue raising money and awareness for families less fortunate than ours. Her treatment includes a bone marrow transplant, and this is only possible by awareness of the disease, research, and willing people to "Be The Match". I encourage everyone to join the registry and and continue the support for #katiestrongtx."

SMU fans will have an opportunity to join the registry on Saturday, April 14 at the spring football game. Be The Match will be present at game three to perform swabs on site and grow the registry to help others overcome blood cancers. Fans aged 18-44 are encouraged to join the registry and help someone in need.

"Eight to 10 minutes and a cheek swab, you can save a life," Be The Match senior recruit coordinator Clifford Ackerman said. "There are over 70 blood diseases and cancers that we can cure. Seventy percent of the time, you're not going to match anyone in your family. You're going to need someone."

Be The Match manages the largest and most diverse marrow registry in the world to help those with life-threatening blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma find a cure.
