As the 2018 AT&T Byron Nelson draws near and the PGA TOUR professionals make their way to south Dallas, this time it will be different. On Tuesday, players weren't on the Trinity Forest Golf Club championship course, but instead on the short course and at the
Payne Stewart SMU Golf Training Center.
Health. Wellness. Children. Military. All initiatives the Mahan Foundation are behind. Tuesday at the Mahan Foundation Match Play event, health and wellness were at the center of attention, as they battle cancer – specifically leukemia.
Cancer is an ugly thing, especially when it hits home. On January 17, head coach
Jason Enloe's wife, Katie, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). When the news broke to family, Hunter Mahan and his wife Kandi, Katie's sister, jumped into action.
"We knew a few weeks [after Katie's diagnosis] we wanted to do an event to help with her cause and help the cause with so many suffering from this cancer," Mahan told reporters before Tuesday's event. "We feel really special and honored that the pros have taken time out of their schedules this week to come over and play."
Mahan and his foundation hosted the Mahan Foundation Match Play event to help advance AML research, raise awareness for the nationwide search for bone marrow donors and to help families with the burden of every day expenses that come along with fighting, and beating, cancer. Members of the
Be The Match organization were on site to swab volunteers so they could be put into the bone marrow donor database.
"Hopefully we'll get a bunch of people this week to sign up to be transplants," Mahan added. "In doing that, you are saving a life, so it's extremely important and hopefully we're putting a spotlight on that."
Dozens of PGA TOUR pros such as Jordan Speith, Bill Haas, Matt Kuchar and Robert Streb were in attendance, playing in 2-man best ball matches and bidding on auction pieces to help beat Leukemia.
"Our family is so lucky to have these great friends to help our cause,"
Jason Enloe said. "I want to thank the PGA TOUR players and other professional athletes for taking time to help Hunter and Kandi put on such a great event for an amazing cause. The turnout of amazing sponsors has been overwhelming and the support from the members at Trinity Forest Golf Club is unmatched".
