Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

SMU Falls, 1-0, to Long Beach State

SMU Women's Soccer suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday, failing 1-0 on the road against Long Beach State.

With the loss, SMU fell to 1-1-0, while Long Beach State improved to 1-1-0.

"Both teams played hard and it was clear that one goal was going to be the difference in the game," SMU head coach Chris Petrucelli said. "They got the breaks and we had the chance but couldn't convert. But, I was happy with our effort overall. For a young team, I thought we showed pretty well."

In the 57th minute, Long Beach striker Nadiyah Aiqueiros tallied the only goal of the contest. Rola Radqiya made a run down the left side crossing the ball to Aiqueros in the box who quickly beat keeper Samantha Estrada for the score that would prove to be the difference in the contest.

SMU dominated play in the first half, with seven shots and three on goal while just allowing a pair of shots from the 49ers.  After the tie was broken, the Mustangs pressured Long Beach getting good looks deep into the second half. SMU was awarded a penalty kick for the second consecutive game but LBSU did not allow them to capitalize. Keeper Imani McDonald saved the PK attempt from Courtney Sebazco in the 76th minute.

For the second consecutive game, SMU made a change in goal at halftime, flipping Catie Brown for Samantha Estrada.

Altogether, the Mustangs outshot LBSU 10-8 and had the edge in shots on goal 5-4. Sebazco led the Mustangs with four shots while freshman Celiana Torres took three.

SMU returns to action Thursday as they travel to Houston for a matchup with Rice at 7 p.m before ending the three-game roadtrip with a visit to rival TCU.
