SMU Sweeps Temple To Start 2-0 In Conference Play

DALLAS (SMU) – Lexi Nordmann scored 10 kills to lead SMU to a straight-sets victory against Temple Sunday as the Mustangs started 2-0 in American Athletic Conference matches. The sophomore also had three blocks and hit .500, committing just one error in 18 attempts.

SMU won the third set, 25-22, getting six kills from Hannah Jacobs. The freshman entered the match midway through the third when Brittany Adams suffered an injury. Jacobs had just eight attempts, and scored four of SMU's last six points. The Mustangs erased a 17-14 deficit to keep Temple (4-10, 1-1 The American) from extending the match.

Eva Linden added nine kills, and Rachel Woulfe scored eight kills. Adams had six kills before exiting the match, and Ryan Palmieri also tallied six kills. Watts led the defense with 17 digs. Kendall Patterson recorded 28 assists with 12 digs, and Lily Heim tallied 11 with five digs.

The Mustangs hit .300 in the first set for a 25-21 victory. Linden and Woulfe led the way with four kills each, and freshman Bria' Merchant had seven digs. SMU trailed by three, 9-6, but the Mustangs scored seven straight to take a 13-9 lead. SMU stretched its lead to as many as five, 18-13, before closing out the set with six of the last nine points for the four-point win.

SMU held on for a 26-24 win in the second set, erasing Temple's only chance for set point. With a 23-20 lead, the Mustangs fell behind after a 4-0 run by the Owls. Temple served an error before Kennedy and Palmieri scored kills to give SMU the two-set advantage. Nordmann scored four kills in the set, and the SMU defense recorded 28 digs. Temple outscored SMU 17-15, but SMU led in efficiency, .244-.222, and took advantage of four service errors by the Owls.

The Mustangs play their first conference road match Friday at Cincinnati at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT.
