LAST GAME (L, 76-64 at Connecticut on Jan. 10): STORRS, Conn. (AP) -- Jalen Adams scored 21 points, Alterique Gilbert added 19 and UConn snapped a three-game losing streak with a 76-64 win over SMU on Thursday night. Christian Vital chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds for the Huskies (10-6, 1-2 American Athletic Conference), who won for the first time this season in conference play. Jimmy Whitt Jr. had 20 points and Jahmal McMurray added 15 for SMU (10-5, 2-1), which had won four straight and eight of its previous nine games. The Huskies shot 52 percent from the floor, including a blistering 65 percent in building a 42-31 halftime lead. They extended the lead to 15 points in the second half on a 3-pointer from Gilbert, before SMU made a run, cutting the lead to six points on a putback by Isiaha Mike with 12 minutes to go. But the Huskies answered. It was 64-52 after Josh Carlton followed up a Gilbert miss on a drive to the basket and the lead was 15 again when Gilbert hit a pullup in the lane with five minutes left.
Â
THE SERIES VS. TULSA (19-32): The Mustangs have won five of the last seven meetings. SMU lost 76-67 at Tulsa in the only meeting last season (Feb. 1) after sweeping the two matchups in 2016-17. In 2014-15, the teams met in the 2014-15 regular season finale when the Mustangs clinched the American Athletic Conference Championship with a 67-62 win over the Golden Hurricane in Moody Coliseum on March 8, 2015. The teams were members of the WAC from 1996 to 2005 and then Conference USA from 2005 through 2013. The series between the two schools dates back to 1919-20.
Â
LAST MEETING VS. TULSA (L, 76-67 in Tulsa on Feb. 1, 2018): Playing with only seven scholarship players and without Shake Milton and Jarrey Foster, SMU fell to Tulsa, 76-67. Despite the obvious disadvantage, SMU came out with hot shooting and great energy in the first half. Junior Jahmal McMurray, in particular, knocked down 5 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes for 16 first-half points. McMurray finished with 22 points and hit 7 shots from 3-point range, tying the third-most makes in SMU history. SMU took a one-point lead into halftime by way of a furious finish over the final seconds. Senior Ben Emelogu II knocked down a 3-pointer to pull SMU to one with seven seconds left. Sophomore Jimmy Whitt proceeded to steal an errant pass and hit a midrange jumper at the buzzer to grab the lead. Out of halftime, Tulsa would take control of the game as the numbers caught up to SMU. A 12-0 run from the Golden Hurricane gave Tulsa an 11-point lead before three minutes of the second half had passed. The Mustangs cut Tulsa's lead down to just two possessions on a number of occasions in the second half. Each time though, it seemed like Tulsa was able to find a big shot to stretch back out its lead before SMU could compete a comeback effort. Senior Ben Emelogu II was a huge reason for the second-half pushes as 17 of his career-high 24 points came in the final 20 minutes. Both McMurray and Whitt played all 40 minutes of the contest. Whitt's 13 rebounds were the most by a Mustang this season. While he didn't score, freshman William Douglas also showed great effort to finish with six rebounds, the second-most on the team. The Mustangs were also unable to overcome the huge advantage at the free-throw line that Tulsa enjoyed. Tulsa shot 82 percent from the line and was awarded 19 more free throws than SMU. In a game where SMU needed to limit foul trouble, five of the seven Mustangs that played significant minutes accumulated at least three fouls.
