STORRS, Conn. (SMU) – The Mustangs dropped a road contest against the No. 3 UConn Huskies, 79-39, from Gampel Pavilion on Wednesday.
SMU got out to an early three point before UConn took over in the first quarter,
Johnasia Cash helped to keep it close finishing the period with five points and five boards. UConn outscored SMU 22-6 in the second to take a 30 point into the break. After a high scoring third quarter that featured 44 points, the fourth quarter was quiet as UConn tallied eight points to SMU's four to close out the win.
The Mustangs pulled in 23 offensive rebounds against the Huskies, the most by any team against UConn all season, topping the previous high by five rebounds. The 48 total rebounds by SMU were also the most the Huskies have allowed this season.
Alicia Froling was the Mustangs leading scorer with 13 points while also bringing in 13 boards. Cash finished the contest with a double-double with a dozen points and rebounds, her second double-double of the season. Seven of Cash's rebounds came on the offensive end.
Napheesa Collier led the Huskies with a 22-point night on 9-of-15 shooting that included six blocks. UConn improves to 17-1 and remain unbeaten in its six conference games. The Mustangs fall to 7-12 on the season, and 1-5 in The American.
The Mustangs return to Moody Coliseum on Saturday for a noon matchup with South Florida.
