DALLAS (SMU) – SMU defeated ECU in dominate fashion with a 4-0 win on Sunday afternoon for Senior Day.
The Mustangs (9-5-1, 2-4-0) excelled on the offensive side of the ball, holding a majority of the possession throughout the match and outshooting the Pirates (5-8-2, 2-3-1), 30 to two. Four different Mustangs scored in the win.
SMU started strong with two close opportunities in the first 20 minutes of play. The ball finally found the back of the net when
Courtney Sebazco crossed a pass to
Jewel Boland, who found the bottom right corner of the net to take a 1-0 lead in the 26
th minute. Less than one minute later,
Mary Meehan and
Allie Thornton worked to assist
Celiana Torres, who placed the ball in the same spot for SMU's second goal.
Coming out of the break, SMU kept working to add to its lead. In the second half, the Mustangs tallied 16 shots to ECU's one. An insurance goal came in the 68
th minute when
Isabelle Nashmi headed the ball in off of assists from Torres and Sebazco for a 3-0 lead.
To cap off the Senior Day match, seniors
Emily Cope and
Robyn Maurer worked to extend SMU's lead to four. After Cope's shot was blocked by the Pirates, Maurer tapped the ball in from the other side of the goal for her second of the season in the 77
th minute.
The Mustang defense worked hard, keeping ECU to only two shots with one on goal to secure SMU's seventh shutout of the season.
