SMU (10-6-1, 3-5-0) fell behind when Memphis (15-1-1, 7-0-1) earned a 1-0 lead after the Mustangs put the ball in goal while trying to clear it.
The Mustangs quickly found the equalizer in the 17
th minute when
Jewel Boland's initial shot was deflected and her second one found the upper left-hand corner of the net to tie the game at one.
"It's always deflating when you get the ball in your own goal," head coach
Chris Petrucelli said. "Our response was outstanding and it was great to get that equalizer right afterward."
The two battled for possession for the rest of the first 45 minutes as SMU held a slim 9-8 shot advantage. The Tigers were able to net a goal in the 41

Both teams were held scoreless throughout the second half of play. The Mustangs came close on multiple occasions but couldn't place the ball just right to tie the match, sending in shots that fell just outside of the goal posts.
Tatum Sutherland had six saves during her time in goal, making some crucial plays to hold the Tigers to a one-goal lead, a feat that has been rare for Memphis opponents throughout 2019.
SMU is fifth in conference standings after its match on Sunday. Next up, the Mustangs will take on Houston at Westcott Field on Thursday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. CT for a chance to clinch a spot in the conference tournament.
"When we get to Thursday, we will go into it with the same attitude that we go into every game with," Petrucelli said. "We want to win."
