PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AAC/SMU) -- Senior Patrick Nelson was named the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Mustangs' 34-31 win over Houston last Thursday.

Nelson had seven tackles in the win, including a team-leading 3.0 tackles-for-loss, 2.0 sacks and a forced fumble. It was his fourth game of the season with multiple sacks.

Overall, Nelson leads the team with 12.5 TFLs and 9.5 sacks in 2019 and is second on the team with 52 tackles. Nationally, he ranks sixth in sacks per game at 1.19 (1st AAC) and 15th in TFLs per game at 1.5 (2nd AAC). 

This is his second Player of the Week honor after winning the award following SMU's 49-27 defeat of North Texas in week two. 

Nelson and the No. 15/14 Mustangs travel to No. 24/13 Memphis for a prime time match-up Saturday at 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC.
