DALLAS (SMU) - The Mustangs' comeback attempt against TCU fell short, 57-56, on Wednesday night inside Moody Coliseum.
The rivalry game came down to the final possession as the Mustangs fought their way back from a 10-point deficit. The Mustangs forced a turnover and recorded a block in the final minute to put themselves in a position to spoil TCU's night but couldn't find the final bucket in the hard-fought closing seconds.
Johnasia Cash had another productive game on both ends of the floor. The junior finished with 15 points and seven boards in the contest. Both
BriShonne Tollie and
Reagan Bradley scored in double figures on the night.
Early in the game, TCU (4-0) took a 14-9 lead after one period that saw both defenses force consistent turnovers. The Horned Frogs led by as many as seven before the Mustangs went on a 6-0 run. TCU took a five-point lead into the break, 29-24. The Mustangs forced 12 TCU turnovers and drew first-half 16 fouls.
SMU (2-2) came roaring back against the Horned Frogs in the third quarter. The Mustangs tied the game up at 35 midway through the third with some solid offensive rebounding. Cash dropped 11 in the quarter as the Mustangs finished period on a 7-0 run. Cash's jumper with 2:09 to go in the third gave SMU its first lead of the contest.
The two teams went back and forth, trading buckets for the first eight minutes of the final session. TCU's three point-edge was trimmed to one on Cash's jumper with 1:43 to play which TCU quickly matched on the other end. After an SMU turnover,
Kayla White stole it back from TCU and Tollie brought it to one-point game with a transition layup.
Cash came up big again, recording a block with 38 seconds to go and putting SMU in a position to take the lead. The Mustangs got off one shot in the final seconds before a series of stoppages slowly brought the game to a close.
Three Mustangs finished with 7 boards in the game, Tollie, Cash and
Alexis Leggett. Leggett's seven boards came in just eight minutes of action in which she also recorded two key blocks. Tollie is averaging 13.3 points on the season after a 14-point night.
SMU falls to 42-21 all-time against their local rivals. The win was TCU's sixth straight win in the series, all decided by 10 points or less.
The Mustangs return to the floor when they venture west for the Tiger Turkey Classic hosted by the Unversity of the Pacific in Stockton Calif. SMU faces CSUN in the opening round on Friday, Nov. 29 at 4 pm CT. They'll face either Pacific or Indiana State on Saturday.
