THE SERIES VS. TULSA (20-32): The Mustangs have won seven of the last nine meetings, inculding the 77-57 matchup in Dallas on Jan. 12. SMU lost 76-67 at Tulsa in the only meeting last season (Feb. 1) after sweeping the two matchups in 2016-17. In 2014-15, the teams met in the 2014-15 regular season finale when the Mustangs clinched the American Athletic Conference Championship with a 67-62 win over the Golden Hurricane in Moody Coliseum on March 8, 2015. The teams were members of the WAC from 1996 to 2005 and then Conference USA from 2005 through 2013. The series between the two schools dates back to 1919-20.
LAST TIME VS TULSA (W ,77-57 vs Tulsa on Jan. 12) DALLAS (AP) - Jahmal McMurray hit six 3-pointers and scored 22 points and SMU rolled to a 77-57 win over Tulsa on Saturday night. Ethan Chargois added 18 points for the Mustangs (11-5, 3-1 American Athletic Conference), who had two big runs to control the game. Three different Mustangs drilled 3-pointers in a 13-0 run and, after consecutive 3s from the Golden Hurricanes, SMU ran off another 10 points for a 33-17 lead 3:36 before the half. Tulsa scored the final five points of the first half and first five of the second to close within 38-32 before Chargois stopped the charge with five points in a 7-0 run. Tulsa (11-6, 1-3) kept it close to 10 until just after the midpoint of the second half when Chargois and McMurray hit 3s to start a 16-2 run that iced it. SMU was 13 of 32 from distance. Jeriah Horne had four 3-pointers and 14 points for Tulsa, which was outrebounded 44-29, 15-7 on the offensive end. SMU honored the No. 32 jersey of three-time Southwest Conference star Ira Terrell, who played from 1972-76 and is still second on the Mustangs' rebounding list and sixth in scoring.
THE SERIES VS. CINCINNATI (5-12) (4-12+): SMU fell in two close games against Cincinnati this season, 73-68 at Cincinnati on Feb. 2 and 52-49 in Dallas on Feb. 27. Cincinnati won all three meetings in 2017-18 after SMU won 2-of-3 meetings during the 2016-17 season, including a 71-56 win on March 12, 2017 to win the American Athletic Conference Tournament and earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. Since becoming conference foes, Cincinnati holds a 8-3 record over the Mustangs. Prior to the AAC, the series had been dormant since 1974-75. SMU won the only previous neutral site encounter in 1966, an NCAA Midwest Regional contest in Lubbock, Texas. (+4-12 officially all-time).
THIS SEASON vs. CINCINNATI: (L, 52-49 vs [23/22] Cincinnati on Feb. 27) DALLAS (AP) -- Rashawn Fredericks put No. 23 Cincinnati ahead to stay with his only two field goals and the Bearcats overcame a horrible shooting night to beat SMU 52-49 on Wednesday. Fredericks finished with six points for the Bearcats (24-4, 13-2), and his consecutive layups midway through the second half made it 36-33. That was part of an 8-0 run, and Cincinnati never trailed again despite shooting a season-low 26.6 percent (17 of 64) from the field. Jarron Cumberland led Cincinnati with 12 points, well below his season average of 18.6 per game that was second in the conference. He didn't reach double figures until making four free throws in the final 37 seconds. Cincinnati has won 12 of its last 13 games, the only loss in that span at league-leading Houston (27-1, 14-1) on Feb. 10. The Bearcats are the defending AAC champions, and the last of their three remaining regular-season games is at home March 10 against the Cougars. Jahmal McMurray had 27 points for SMU (13-14, 5-10), which has lost seven of eight. The Mustangs were coming off a 95-48 loss at UCF on Sunday that was the most lopsided defeat in program history. After a dunk by Cumberland put Cincinnati up 19-14 with 5:59 left in the first half, SMU ended the half with a 14-3 run for a 28-22 lead at the break. The Bearcats, who missed 11 of their first 12 shots to start the game, made only one of their last nine in the half -- a 3-ponter by Justin Jenifer that put them up 22-20. SMU then went ahead on a 3-pointer by McMurray. Cincinnati scored the first six points of the second half, a jumper by Keith Williams with 17:16 left making it 28-all for the only tie of the second half. (L, 73-68 at [rv/rv] Cincinnati on Feb. 2) CINCINNATI (AP) -- Jarron Cumberland scored 24 points Saturday night, and Cincinnati let a 12-point lead slip away before rallying for a 73-68 victory over SMU. Cumberland hit a 3-pointer after SMU tied it late, helping the Bearcats (19-3, 8-1 American Athletic) pull out their seventh straight victory. SMU's Jimmy Whitt Jr. hit a shot with 19 seconds left that cut it to 70-68. After Cincinnati's Keith Williams made one of his two free throws, Jahmal McMurray was short on a 3-point attempt to tie it with 4.3 seconds left. Cane Broome sealed it with a pair of free throws. McMurray had 21 points for SMU (12-9, 4-5), which has lost four of five. The Bearcats made 8 of 17 from beyond the arc in the first half, when they led by as many as 12 points. Cumberland led the way with 13 points. McMurray made a pair of 3s and a 15-foot jumper that sparked SMU's second-half comeback, and Isiaha Mike's 3 tied it 60-60 with 6:17 to go.
