MEMPHIS, Tenn. (SMU) – Freshman
Reagan Bradley led the SMU women's basketball team with 14 points at Memphis Tuesday night, reaching double figures for the seventh time in the last nine games.
Kayla White, 12, and
Johnasia Cash, 10, also scored in double digits, but it wasn't enough as SMU lost 57-52 in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
The Mustangs' tenacity on the defensive end of the floor allowed them to limit the Tigers to just nine points in the first quarter. After the first 10 minutes, SMU held a five-point lead, 14-9. SMU maintained a multi-possession lead throughout most of the game, and led by four, 42-38, entering the fourth quarter.
SMU scored four of the first five points in the final quarter, stretching the lead to eight, 48-40, with 7:15 left to play. The basket came on an offensive put-back by
Kayla White. The pair would be her last points of the game. Memphis answered 15 second later, sparking a 10-2 run by the Tigers. With 3:12 remaining on the clock, the two teams each had 50 points.
The Mustangs (7-10, 1-4 The American) took the lead with 2:19 left on a layup by
JaQuia White. The Tigers (10-8, 1-4 The American) held SMU scoreless the rest of the way for the 57-52 victory, finishing the game on a 15-2 run that lasted 4:59 seconds.
Bradley added five more assists to push her season total to 74, 21 away from tying the freshman single-season record of 95. She also finished with five rebounds and three steals.
SMU plays its next two games in Moody Coliseum starting Saturday against Tulsa at 2 p.m.
