SMU Men's Tennis plays a Saturday doubleheader, facing Oklahoma Baptist at 8 a.m. before matching up with Portland at 3 p.m.

Off to their best start since 2015, the Mustangs have rolled to a 5-1 record. Last weekend, SMU a tough road win at Lamar, rallying from 0-3 down to take the victory from the Cardinals. SMU then took down UT Tyler, 6-1. The Mustangs only loss came at the hands of then No. 2 Texas, now the top-ranked team in the country.

HOT START
The 5-1 start equals their best season opening run since 2015. Both 2015 and 2020 squads only loss in the first six games came at home to Texas. The 2015 team would go on to a 9-1 record to open the season and finish the campaign ranked 47th by the ITA. With a pair of wins on Saturday, SMU can notch its fifth 7-1 start in the last 25 seasons.

ABOUT OKLAHOMA BAPTIST
Oklahoma Baptist has yet to play a dual match in the 2020 season. The Bison posted a 6-13 record in 2019 including a 0-4 mark in conference play. After meeting the Mustangs, OBU will roll over to Arlington for a 3 p.m. matchup against UTA.

ABOUT PORTLAND
Portland is coming off a 7-14 2019 dual match season and currently holds a 2-0 record in the young season.  The Pilots defeated Portland State, 6-1 and Idaho State 7-0 on the opening weekend. Portland remains in Dallas on Sunday to face UTSA at 7 a.m. from the SMU Tennis Complex.  The Pilots return their primary line one singles athlete from 2019, Sema Pankin. Pankin went 10-8 in 2019 including nine line one victories.

RANKED WINS
Caleb Chakravarthi and Tomas Vaise defeated the No. 4 ranked doubles paring on line one against Texas. The duo took down Ito/Sigsgaard of Texas 6-4 for the first doubles point of the match

NEXT UP
The Mustangs head to Virginia to take on Old Dominion on Feb. 7. The team also faces Nebraska in a neutral site match in Norfolk, Va. slated for Feb. 8.

The Pilots and the Mustangs have faced off once before on the court. SMU took down Portland 6-0 in 2014 at home.

LAST TIME OUT
SMU took both ends of a home-road doubleheader at Lamar and at home against UT Tyler. SMU rallied from a 0-3 hole to best Lamar 4-3 in the morning matchup before rebounding from a double point loss to take down UT Tyler, 6-1.
 
SMU TENNIS COMPLEX
The SMU Tennis Complex was awarded the UTSA Most Outstanding Facility Award over the Summer. The complex which features six indoor and six outdoor courts opened in 2015. All SMU home matches are free to attend.
