FORT WORTH, Texas (SMU) - SMU posted five wins over Texas A&M at the TCU Hidden Dual Tournament on Wednesday including a 3-1 mark over the Aggies in doubles.
 
"It was great to see our guys open up 2021 strong with an impressive performance against Texas A&M," said head coach Grant Chen. "It's been 315 days since we last hit the court for a collegiate competition and it's great to finally see the team competing once again. Impressed with our freshman today, going a combined 5-0 in their first college matches."
 
In the final and only non-dual match competition before the regular season, SMU sent a contingent of six Mustangs to Fort Worth to take on Texas A&M and TCU in the two-day event. SMU began the day with singles play against A&M, finishing with a 2-4 mark. A pair of freshmen earned their first collegiate wins in Liam Krall and Julian Steinhausen. Krall topped Guido Marson, 6-4, 6-4 while Steinhausen defeated Pranav Kumar 6-4, 6-3.
 
SMU's impressive doubles performance against the 10^th-ranked Aggies began with Krall and Caleb Chakravarthi rallying from an 0-3 hole to defeat Barnaby Smith and Pranav Kumar in a tight 7-6 (5) match.  Steinhausen and Juan Jose Bianchi took down Rollins/Habib 6-4 while the freshman combo of Steinhausen/Krall topped the Aggies' primary No. 2 doubles pairing of Vacherot/Schachter, 6-3.
 
The only Mustang loss in doubles was Tomas Vaise and Juan Jose Bianchi's 6-3 defeat against the 48^th-ranked doubles team in the country.
 
Chakravarthi, Vaise, Bianchi and Jordi Redelijk will remain in Fort Worth on Thursday to wrap up the competition. The rest of the squad will be on hand for the SMU home opener on Thursday against Prairie View A&M. Match times are set for 10 a.m. and 2 p.m from the SMU Tennis Complex.
