Watson Leads Mustangs With Three Wins In Loss To Houston

DALLAS (SMU) – Freshman Jenna Watson had three of the Mustangs' eight event wins in SMU's 162.5-137.5 loss to Houston on Friday afternoon at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium. Houston is receiving votes in the latest CSCAA Division I Top 25 Poll.

Watson posted her first of three wins at the event in the 200-yard freestyle, with a season-best 1:52.31. She went on to win the 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.81) as well as the 200-yard individual medley (2:05.44).

The Mustangs swept 1 meter action with Nicole Stambo posting an NCAA Zone score of 280.95 for the victory. She has now won all four 1 meter events this season for SMU. In her first action of the 2020-21 season, Katie Crown returned to the boards and placed second with an NCAA Zone qualifying 266.78. Taylor Ohlhauser was third at 263.63.

In 3 meter action, Ohlhauser and Holloway tied for second place, both posting a six-round 298.80. The score was above the NCAA Zone qualifying mark, and was a season-best for Holloway. Stambo and Crown did not compete in the event.

All four Mustang divers have now qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in March.

Olivia Grossklaus continues to lead the Mustangs in the 200-yard butterfly, winning the event for the fourth consecutive meet. The junior covered the distance in 2:03.92 for the win. Placing third in the event was Madison Kinsey (2:07.51).

Alex Stevens made her return to The Nat for the first time in 2020-21 and had a win in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking in at a career-best 23.68. Johanna Gudmundsdottir tied for second in the event with a time of 23.89.

Stevens was also second in the 100-yard freestyle in a season-best 51.24.

Valentina Becerra picked up an event win for the Mustangs, pacing the field in the 100-yard butterfly. Her 56.93 was good for the win, while Maxine Parkinson's 57.08 was good for second.

In the 100-yard breaststroke, Maddy Lewis was SMU's top finisher, turning in runner-up honors at 1:06.56. Finishing just behind her for third was Parkinson at 1:06.65.

In her first meet back with the Mustangs this season, Annabelle Corcoran paced SMU in the 1,000-yard freestyle, finishing third in a time of 10:29.79.

SMU opened the event with a win in the 200-yard medley relay as Indra Vandenbussche, Gabi Grobler, Becerra and Gudmundsdottir turned in a time of 1:45.50.

The Mustangs are back in action Saturday when they host Rice at 11 a.m. at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium. Results will be available on the Meet Mobile App. The event is closed to the public.
