SMU enters the Jacksonville Classic presented by Fabletics with a 3-1 mark. The Mustangs face Missouri in a semifinal on Sunday and then will face [rv/19] Florida State or LMU on Monday.

SMU won back-to-back home games leading up to the Jacksonville Classic, defeating Northwestern State 95-48 and Southeastern Louisiana 78-61. SMU scored 50 points in the first half of each contest. 

The Mustangs have recently won a pair of in season tournaments, defeating Colorado to claim the 2015-16 Las Vegas Classic and knocking off UNLV en route to the 2019-20 Southwestern Showdown championship.

Marcus Weathers had his second straight double-double, 15 points and 12 rebounds, in the win against Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday. Kendric Davis had a season-high 25 points with four assists. Zhuric Phelps had 10 points to hit double figures for the first time. The Mustangs outshot SLU 45.3% to 31.3% and had a 46-37 rebound margin. 

SMU is 54-13 in regular-season non-conference games under Tim Jankovich. The Mustangs are 44-4 at Moody Coliseum in those games, 3-4 in neutral-site games and 7-5 in true road games.

Kendric Davis was selected unanimous preseason All-American Athletic Conference First Team, named to the Naismith Trophy Watch List, the Wooden Award Preseason 50 Watch List, the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Watch List and the Lute Olson Player of the Year Award Watch List. Last season, he was unanimous All-AAC First Team as well as USBWA All-District and NABC All-District. Davis led the AAC in scoring (19.0) and assists (7.6, 4th NCAA) last season, and was the only player to lead his league in both. 

2021-22 ROSTER (2020-21 stats/rankings): SMU returns Kendric Davis along with fellow starters Emmanuel Bandoumel (10.2 points, 24th AAC; 36.4% 3s, 14th AAC) and Isiah Jasey (1.0 blocks, 6th AAC) as well as reserves Jahmar Young Jr. and Darius McBride. SMU added transfers Zach Nutall from Sam Houston (Southland Conference Player of the Year), Marcus Weathers from Duquesne (2-time All-Atlantic 10), Michael Weathers from Texas Southern (SWAC Newcomer of the Year), Tristan Clark from Baylor (2019-20 Karl Malone Watch List) and Franklin Agunanne from Loyola Chicago. Newcomers also include Zhuric Phelps (2021 Texas Mr. Basketball), Jalen Smith (3-star), Stefan Todorovic (Nike Hoop Summit, Serbia U19 Team) and Tyler Lundblade (McDonald's All-American nominee).

2020-21 REVIEW: SMU was in the top three in the AAC in scoring (74.6, 2nd), scoring margin (6.5, 3rd), FG% (45.6, 1st), blocked shots (4.5, 3rd, 35th NCAA) and assists (15.3, 3rd). The Mustangs had three of the top 25 scorers in the AAC; Kendric Davis (19.0, 1st), Feron Hunt (11.1, 19th AAC) and Emmanuel Bandoumel (10.2, 24th AAC). For the second straight season, Davis led the league in assists (7.6, 4th NCAA) and assist-to-turnover ratio (3.2, 10th NCAA). Davis was also among the league leaders in steals (1.6, 4th AAC), FG% (48.1, 7th AAC), 3FG% (37.3, 12th) and FT% (83.3, 5th AAC). Hunt ranked fourth in the AAC shooting 56.0% from the field and was third in rebounds (7.9). In blocked shots, Isiah Jasey was 6th in the AAC at 1.0 and Hunt was 9th at 0.9.

• Marcus Weathers has back-to-back doubles-doubles. He is averaging 13.5 points (11th AAC) and 8.3 rebounds (2nd AAC) while hitting 58.3% on FGs (1st AAC) and 90.0% on FTs.

LAST GAME (W, 78-61 vs Southeastern Louisiana on Nov. 18): DALLAS (AP) -- Kendric Davis had 25 points as SMU topped Southeastern Louisiana 78-61 on Thursday night. Davis hit 10 of 12 free throws. Marcus Weathers had 15 points and 12 rebounds for SMU (3-1). Zhuric Phelps added 10 points. Emmanuel Bandoumel had six rebounds. Jalyn Hinton had 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Lions (2-2). Keon Clergeot added 14 points. Gus Okafor had 12 points and 12 rebounds.

THE SERIES VS MISSOURI: SMU is 4-9 against the Tigers. The programs have not met since the 1999-2000 season.

LAST TIME VS MISSOURI (L, 63-60 on Dec. 1, 1999): COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - Late-game heroics by Jeff Hafer led Missouri to a 63-60 nail-biting victory over Southern Methodist Wednesday night. Hafer began by tying the game 57-57 on a 3-pointer with 3:10 left. Then, with 90 seconds left and the game still tied, Hafer stripped the ball from SMU (4-1) and passed it to Tajudeen Soyoye, who slam dunked Missouri (5-1) into the lead.

SERIES/LAST TIME VS FLORIDA STATE (L, 59-52 at FSU on Nov. 14, 2006): The programs have only met once. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Toney Douglas scored 14 points in the second half, including a pair of crucial free throws with 39 seconds left, to lead Florida State to a 59-52 victory over SMU in the final in the Colonial Classic. Al Thornton scored 15 points and pulled down seven rebounds and Jerel Allen added 11 points for the Seminoles (3-0). SMU's Jon Killen scored a career-high 15 points, but also had eight turnovers. Donatas Rackauskas added 13 points and six rebounds off the bench. The Mustangs also got 12 points from Derrick Roberts. SMU (2-1) held a 26-25 halftime lead, and led late in the second half. Douglas hit three consecutive baskets to give Florida State a 45-41 lead with 5:29 left in the game. SMU closed to within two points with 44 seconds left on a three-pointer from Rackauskas before Douglas' free throws. Ike Ofoegbu and Killen were named to the All-Tournament Team. Ofoegbu averaged 14.0 points and 6.7 rebounds. Killen averaged 10.7 points, 5.4 assists, and 3.3 steals.

SERIES/LAST TIME VS LOYOLA MARYMOUNT (W, 73-58 at SMU on Nov. 11, 2012): The programs have met only once. DALLAS (AP) -- Nick Russell scored 19 points as the Mustangs defeated Loyola Marymount 73-58 Sunday. Ryan Manuel added 14 points for SMU, Shawn Williams had 12 and Jalen Jones finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Loyola Marymount (1-1) was led by Anthony Ireland with 17 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. Ashley Hamilton added 16 points and Ayodeji Egbeyemi had 14.

UP NEXT: The Mustangs have a five-game homestand beginning with Sam Houston on Nov. 24. The games at Moody Coliseum include ULM (Nov. 28), UNLV (Dec. 1), Vanderbilt (Dec. 4) and Dayton (Dec. 8).

BIG-SHOT BANDOUMEL: Emmanuel Bandoumel hit a driving jumper with 0.2 on the clock for the 66-64 win at [-/rv] Dayton on Dec. 5. It was his second game winner. He previously hit a three that beat the shot-clock buzzer with 30 seconds left in overtime for a 73-72 victory over [20/19] Houston on Feb. 15, 2020.

FIVE AND DIME: Kendric Davis is averaging 17.8 points (5th AAC) and 6.0 assists (1st AAC, 20th NCAA) with a 1.8 assist-to-turnover ratio (7th AAC). Last season, he averaged 7.6 assists (1st AAC, 4th NCAA). He has 5 or more assists in 37 of 46 games at SMU (3 of 3 this season). He set the AAC record with 14 assists vs Cincinnati 1/7/21 and has notched 13 assists twice (vs Houston Baptist 12/2/20 & vs Tulane on 2/1/20). He had 5 or more assists in 14 straight games (11/27/19 to 1/25/20). That was the longest streak with at least 5 assists since the SMU-record of 16 by Butch Moore from 3/14/85 to 1/8/86. HEAD COACH TIM JANKOVICH... is in his sixth season at the helm at SMU after four seasons as the associate head coach. He is in his 39th season as a collegiate coach, and his 17th as a head coach. As a head coach, he is 261-177 (.596) [104-56 at SMU (.650), including 72-17 (.809) at Moody Coliseum (started 36-0, second best in NCAA history)]. That includes a 104-64 mark at ISU where his teams recorded four top-three finishes in the Missouri Valley, reached the conference tournament final three times and earned four NIT bids. As an assistant or head coach, his teams are 628-375 (.626) with six regular season conference championships, four league tournament titles, nine NCAA Tournament appearances and nine NIT bids. This is his 12th season as the leader of a Division I program, including five as head coach at Illinois State (2007-12) and four at North Texas (1993-97). The 2017-18 Mustangs started 13-6 with three wins over ranked opponents, topping No. 2 Arizona in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, No. 14 USC at Moody Coliseum and No. 7 Wichita State on the road. In 2016-17, SMU finished 30-5 and No. 11 in the AP poll after winning The American regular season and tournament titles en route to the NCAA Tournament. In 2015-16, he coached the Mustangs to a 9-0 start as SMU was eventually the last unbeaten team in the country at 18-0, and winning the Las Vegas Classic title during the season-opening streak. The Mustangs went 25-5, finishing the season ranked No. 24 after reaching a high of No. 8. In 2014-15, the Mustangs claimed the AAC regular season and tournament championships en route to the NCAA Tournament. SMU was the top seed in the 2014 NIT, reaching the title game.
