DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's swimming and diving team finished second at the 2021 American Athletic Conference Championships.

The final night of action was highlighted by Olivia Grossklaus' repeat win in the 200-yard butterfly, and Johanna Holloway's runner-up performance on platform to earn her the title Most Outstanding Diver of the Championships.

Joining Holloway at the awards ceremony was her coach Darian Schmidt, who was honored as a Diving Coach of the Year.

Houston took the team title with 1,009 points ahead of SMU's 753.5. Cincinnati finished third at 732.5 and Tulane was fourth at 617.

Grossklaus, who became the second fastest performer in SMU history with her 2020 championship, lowered her season NCAA B cut to 1:57.99 to lead the field. Maxine Parkinson (2:01.08) was fourth in her first conference championship, and Valentina Becerra (2:02.71) won the Consolation Final.

Holloway earned her third straight medal in platform competition with her runner-up performance. The junior registered a five-round 264.90 to lead the Mustangs. One-meter champion Nicole Stambo was fourth in the event.

In all, the Mustangs won five of nine total diving medals at the Championships, including a sweep of 1 meter.

SMU finished second in the night's relay, as the 400-yard freestyle team of Alex Stevens, Gabi Grobler, Indra Vandenbussche and Johanna Gudmundsdottir combined for a 3:20.57.

The Mustangs were represented by three of those swimmers in the 100-yard freestyle Championship Final with Stevens (50.32) leading the way in fourth. Vandenbussche (50.33) and Gudmundsdottir (50.47) finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

Grobler (1:59.61) was the top finisher in the 200-yard backstroke at fourth place, her highest career performance in the event, and Kiley Vandevier (1:59.77) won the Consolation Final for the third straight year.

Two Mustangs scored in the A Final of the 200-yard breaststroke, with Jenna Watson (2:18.19) leading the way in sixth place. Julia Yakushi (2:18.47) finished seventh, and Maddy Lewis was the winner in the B Final.

Annabelle Corcoran was the top finisher in the 1650 free, coming in at 17:02.62 for eighth.

The Mustangs now await the qualifying announcement for the 2021 NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Championships. Divers will compete at the NCAA Zone D Championships March 11-13.
