Dawson Ovard led four SMU men's golfers at the Individual Spring Kickoff Monday at Las Colinas Country Club in the Individual Spring Kickoff. Ovard shot 4-over, tying for 17
th.
Ovard shot a first-round 72 at the par 71 / 7,025-yard course, then signed for a 3-over 74 in the afternoon round. Ovard had a consistent day, avoiding a score worse than bogey and shot par-or-better on 30 of 36 holes. His 17
th-place finish marks his fourth top-20 finish in six career collegiate events.
Prescott Butler's day was highlighted by a 1-under 70 in the morning, as he ended up tied for 27
th at 6-over 148. His first round marked the 13
th time he turned in a par-or-better scorecard as a collegian, but for the first time as a Mustangs. Butler ranked fourth in the field with eight birdies, and finished the day playing the five par 3s at Las Colinas Country Club at even par and the four par 5s at -3.
Ben Wong finished 44
th after shooting 76-77. Wong also played the par 5s at 3-under, going bogey-free on the long holes.
Tyson Dinsmore tied for 48
th at +17, sinking three birdies on the day.
Little Rock's Anton Albers won the event at 1-under. Only four players in the field finished at even-par or better.
The Mustangs return to action February 15-17 at The Prestige, hosted by UC Davis in Palm Desert, California.
