DALLAS (SMU) – SMU women's tennis swept both ends of a doubleheader, 4-0, against Wichita State and Oral Roberts on Friday at the SMU Tennis Complex.
Â
"Another great day for tennis," said head coach Jeff Nevolo. "Our team was challenged by Wichita State and had to dig deep on a couple courts to get across the finish line. Nicole (Petchey) coming back from 0-3 in the second to win the match was huge. After a tough first match, I thought we came out with the appropriate enthusiasm and took care of business in match two. Proud of our group. It's great to be 1-0 in the league. We have three big matches next week and the team is ready."
Â
Facing their first American Athletic Conference foe in Wichita State, the Mustangs jumped out to an early lead with a 2-0 doubles win to start the day. Hadley Doyle and Jackie Nylander won 6-3 on court one while Claudia Bartolome and Chandler Carter won 6-2 on court two.
Â
Singles started well for SMU as Winslow Huth finished her 6-1, 6-0 win on court five in speedy fashion followed by Carter, 6-2, 6-0 on court three.
Â
With a 3-0 lead, the Shockers put the Mustang win in jeopardy by tightening up the final four courts. WSU won first sets on courts one and four, while SMU led on six and two behind Doyle and Nicole Petchey. Doyle went to a tiebreaker with a chance to secure the dual match win but the Shockers' Marta Bellucco was able to force a third. Petchey was in a 3-0 hole on six, but rallied back to 4-4, before serving and breaking to clinch the SMU victory.
Â
After an hour and a half layoff, the Mustangs were back at it against Oral Roberts. The Mustangs won doubles with 6-3 wins on courts one and two from Doyle/Nylander and Bartolome/Carter. The Mustangs had a rare chance to win three doubles courts due to simultaneous match points but dropped the point on court three where Petchey/Huth were up 5-3.
Â
In singles, the Mustangs didn't drop a set and won an impressive 79% of games (60-of-76). Bartolome was perfect with her 6-0, 6-0 win on court five while Petchey lost just one game, 6-1, 6-0 on court six. Doyle won court two 6-0, 6-2, tying her for the team lead in singles wins with Petchey. Huth was closing in on a 6-1, 4-2 win at the time of clinch while Carter was up 6-3, 2-1 and Nylander leading 6-4, 0-2.
Â
The Mustangs improve to 7-6 on the season including 7-1 at home and 1-0 against fellow AAC teams. The team returns to the court on Tuesday (3/9) as they take on the Memphis Tigers in a 2 p.m. matchup at the SMU Tennis Complex.
