Jun 10

EUGENE, Ore. (SMU) - Ashton Woods earned second-team All-American status as the Mustangs competed in three events at the NCAA Championship from Hayward Field.

Woods became the first Mustang hurdler to earn All-American status with her 16th-place performance in the 400 hurdles. Her time of 58.33 in the national semifinals finished off her impressive  individual season that saw the senior break the school 400 hurdles record four separate times during the year. Alongside her qualification with the 4x400 team, Woods was the first Mustang to qualify for the NCAA Championships in two events since Simone Du Tuit in 2011.

Jernaya Sharp posted a time of 13.49 in the 100 hurdles to finish sixth in her heat and 20th overall at the NCAA Championships. The performance capped off an excellent season for the senior transfer from Notre Dame. Sharp broke the 33-year old SMU record in the 100 hurdles with her top time of the season of 13.11. With her qualification for the championship, Sharp earned honorable mention All-American status.

In the 4x400, the team of Woods, Whitney Williams, Annette Bolomboy and Chika Iwuamadi finished in 21st with a time of 3:39.21. The team's 2021 season accomplishments included breaking the program record on two occasions and an All-AAC performance at the conference championships. They became the first 4x400 team at SMU to qualify for the NCAA Championships and the second relay team joining the 4x100 team in 2015.

With Thursday's action, the Mustangs wrapped up an excellent 2021 outdoor season. The team set four program records and qualified 10 Mustangs for regionals, one off the program record. SMU earned  three spots at the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2016, with all three becoming the first qualifiers in Mustang history in their respective events.
