DALLAS (SMU) – SMU furled the East Carolina offense en route to a sweep in American Athletic Conference action at Moody Coliseum Friday.
 
SMU grabbed the early advantage with a convincing 25-14 result in the opening game. The Mustangs cruised to the result, converting at a 33% clip, while holding ECU to five kills, with five errors on 31 attempts. The Pirates committed three miscues on the final three rallies, securing the victory for the home side.
 
A 6-0 spurt pushed the Mustangs to a 13-6 cushion in game two, riding the momentum for a 2-0 lead. Alex Glover delivered a successful swing, posting set point for SMU at 24-19. The Mustangs cashed in on another attack error by the guest to salt away the game.
 
ECU fought hard to avoid being swept by the Mustangs for the second time this season. The Pirates remained within striking distance and led at the media stoppage. SMU exited the break and ran off six points in succession, with ECU calling a timeout after four. The Mustangs clung to a one-point margin, when Marieke van der Mark slammed home a winner to set her team up with three match points at 24-22. After a successful swing by the visitors, van der Mark found the floor to seal the victory.

SMU improved to 19-8 overall, including 12-3 in the league, while the Pirates dropped to 9-18, 4-11.
  • The Mustangs lead the all-time series 19-5, with a 10-1 mark at home.
    • SMU won its fifth straight in the series and 10 in a row on its home floor.
    • The Pirates' lone win in Dallas occurred in the first meeting in Dallas, Sept. 29, 2006.
    • ECU last triumph over the Pirates ended in four sets, in Greenville, N.C., Sept. 30, 2018wlast win in the series occurred Oct. 26, 2018, its last victory at home over SMU.
  • SMU swept the season series for the sixth time, without losing two matches in the same season as AAC foes.

    • With her ace, Wheeler moved into seventh place on the program's single-season list.
  • Graduate transfer OPP Marieke van der Mark hit .471, with 11 kills and a block.
  • Senior MB London Austin-Roark totaled six kills, five digs and four blocks.
  • Junior S Celia Cullen filled the stat sheet with 36 assists, eight digs, four kills, two blocks and two service aces.
  • Donning the libero jersey, graduate transfer Tatum Ticknor finished with 12 digs and an assist.
  • Sophomore OH Natalie Perdue recorded four kills, four digs, two blocks and an ace.
  • Sophomore MB Kaitlyn Knobbe tallied two blocks.
  • Senior MB Alex Glover chipped in three kills and two blocks.
