INDIANAPOLIS (NCAA/NIT) - The SMU men's basketball team is a No. 1 seed in the 2022 National Invitation Tournament, the tournament committee announced on Sunday night. The Mustangs will host Nicholls in the first round at Moody Coliseum on Wednesday at 7 p.m. CT.
SMU earned its fifth postseason berth in the past nine seasons, including a run to the 2014 NIT championship game and a No. 3 seed in the 16-team 2021 NIT field.
The Mustangs enter the tournament with a 23-8 record, including a perfect 16-0 record in Moody Coliseum. The 18-game home winning streak is tied for fifth nationally among active streaks. SMU was 13-4 in American Athletic Conference play, earning the No. 2 seed in the AAC Championship.
Nicholls is 21-11 on the season, winning the Southland Conference regular-season title with an 11-3 league record. The winner of SMU and Nicholls will take on the winner of No. 4 Washington State and Santa Clara in the second round of the NIT on Saturday or Sunday.

NCAA TOURNAMENT: The Mustangs are the third replacement team in the NCAA Tournament field. Should the current field have teams withdraw due to COVID-19 before 5 p.m. CT on Monday, the Mustangs would be in line to be inserted into the bracket. The replacement teams are Dayton, Oklahoma, SMU and Texas A&M.
