Nicol Helps Canada To Podium Performance At FINA World Championships

BUDAPEST (SMU) –
Mustang All-American Rachel Nicol (2012-15) helped Canada to a bronze medal in the 4x100m medley relay at the 19th FINA World Championships held in Budapest, Hungary.

The breaststroke specialist posted a 1:07.17 second leg, to help Canada to a finals time of 3:55.01, just behind silver medalists Australia and the gold medal team from the United States. Nicol was also part of Canada's relay at the 2016 Rio Olympics that placed fifth, while also finishing fifth as an individual in the 100m breaststroke. 

Nicol also competed in the 50m breaststroke, finishing 18th in a field of 56, just two spots out of semifinal qualification.

Incoming Mustang Jimena Leguizamon Leal made history for Colombia, becoming the first swimmer to qualify for a semifinal at World Championships doing so in the 200m backstroke. Leguizamon Leal, who will join the program this fall, finished 16th overall with a semifinal time of 2:15.11. She also competed in the 100m back, finishing 26th.

Ilektra Lebl, who exhausted her eligibility following the 2021-22 season, represented Greece in the mixed 4x1500m open water relay. The team was one of four in the 23-team field to be disqualified.
